Stefan Heyer’s artistic practice is shaped by a persistent search. His work does not develop in a straightforward or linear manner, but through a system of anticipations, returns, and displacements. Painterly elements emerge, disappear, and reappear years later in transformed form. Over time, this process has produced an independent visual language characterised by increasing complexity, autonomy, and focus.

Different painterly decisions, gestures, and events are allowed to coexist within Heyer’s paintings, to contradict one another, and to generate new forms of tension. Density and openness, darkness and transparency, aggression and softness alternate throughout the work. Photo transfers, abstract forms, architectural fragments, traces of writing, and symbolic figures are introduced, emphasised, combined, or withheld according to the requirements of each painting. They are not fixed motifs, but elements of an open painterly vocabulary.

Heyer’s practice is accompanied by themes and ideas drawn from philosophy, science, esotericism, mythology, biology, music, design, and popular culture. These references are often present only through a title or a small detail within the image. They open up an additional dimension of engagement, yet they do not determine how the paintings must be understood. No knowledge of their underlying subjects is required in order to encounter them as paintings.

The fact that Heyer is self-taught appears less as a biographical detail than as a fundamental attitude. His scepticism towards prescribed paths, established authorities, and readily available answers informs both his artistic practice and his wider relationship to reality. Rather than relying on instructions or academic conventions, he has chosen to pursue his own often winding and uncertain path. Detours, dead ends, and moments of becoming lost are not obstacles, but essential parts of the search.

Underlying this search is the intuition that beneath the countless fragments, images, ideas, and observations that make up our experience of reality, there may be a deeper connection. Not a doctrine or a closed system, but a form of coherence that cannot be fully accessed through conceptual thought alone.

Heyer’s paintings therefore do not attempt to provide definitive answers. Instead, they shift the search onto another plane. Their aim is not knowledge, proof, or unambiguous statements, but suggestion, certainty, and non-conceptual experience. Fragmentation, uncertainty, and contradiction do not disappear. For a brief moment, however, they may coexist without demanding resolution.

This is also where Heyer locates the promise of art: the possibility that a work can make available an experience that cannot be reached by any other means. The artist does not fulfil this promise alone. He creates a space in which it may take place, both for himself and for the viewer. Whether this possibility is realised remains individual and subjective, occurring through the acts of painting and looking.

This understanding is closely connected to Heyer’s notion of the “Eternal Now.” The term does not describe a state of final knowledge. Rather, it refers to a moment in which the fragments of the world briefly assume a form – a moment of stillness, unity, or certainty that cannot be justified through argument and may nevertheless be experienced.
